The Avett Brothers Live at Grimey's for Record Store Day [new song!]

New tune, reportedly called "Laundry Room"

Last night I dreamt all night long,
woke with a head full of songs....

I spent the whole day,
i wrote 'em down,
but it's a shame

tonight i'll burn the lyrics,
cause every chorus was your name...

Zach Galifianakis, Will Oldham do Kanye West

I'll never get sick of this. Ever. Even though it's a couple of months past the blogger expiration date to post this, I'm gonna. If anyone cracks me up more than Will Oldham being 'normal', it's Zach Galifianakis with a chainsaw. Na, Na, Na, Na. Wait till I get me money right....

Zooey Deschanel LOVES Cotton

The Touch, The Feel, The Fabric Of Our Lives...

Zooey Dechanel, everyone's favorite aural sweetheart (and she's really easy on the eyes, too) has teamed up with, um, the folks that bring you Cotton. She's appearing in a new TV spot (below) and, the coolest part is, the full version of the song is currently available on The Fabric Of Our Lives' Website (no joke) along with a track by country radio sweetheart Miranda Lambert.

If, like me, you find yourself wanting to play the song, over and over again.... incessantly....annoying neighbors and scaring the cat, then the d/l link can be found both here (below) and there (website above). Please PLEASE visit "there". God knows I don't need the good ol' US government breaking down my door. Not today. Not on Tax Day...

Next up for Zooey...maybe the "Other White Meat" folks. Or perhaps the "Hankering for a Hunka Cheese" Council. Who knows?

Also, pick up Paste Magazine's #1 album of 2008, She & Him's Volume One, an incredible album from M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel.....

PHiSH - 12/11/1997 Rochester War Memorial [SBD]

My love for Phish is well documented. But truthfully, it's a love/hate relationship.  I think that a large percentage of Phish heads will tell you the same.  We thrive in the glow of the good moments, when the music is heavenly and transcendent, and stick it out through the bad, because we know that just around the corner, out of nowhere will pop up some amazing shit. Very eloquent, I know.  One of those basking in the glow moments, for me, was their show from Rochester, NY in December 1997.  The first set is great.  But the real treat, for me, is the entire 5-star second set.  Sit back, take a breather, and be prepared to take flight.

In Memory Of Kurt Cobain: Nirvana @ The Cabaret Metro 10-21-1991 [Audio]

I've been up to no good lately, which, sadly keeps me away from authoring duties, ...sometimes.  Sorry 'bout that.  But yesterday was a big anniversary for my generation.  Kurt Cobain's body was found April 8th 1994, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. I remember coming home from school, and hearing the news on TV.  A reluctant icon of a generation, the unwilling leader of the grunge movement, was no longer.

I remember picking out my wardrobe carefully the next day. In typical high school fashion, it was black jeans, and the perfect, plain black t-shirt, in honor of Kurt. That was fifteen fucking years ago.  My god. Well, here's my toast to Kurt Cobain.  I raise my glass to him, with one of my favorite live shows, Cabaret Metro 1991.

You Keep Scratching at the Old Paint... [mixtape]

in hindsight you're gonna wish you were here
you keep scratching at the old paint
but the wood is still there
and the room is still there

if you're trying to feel the wind
well that's a window you're pressed against

Look for Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, Wilco (performing Daniel Johnston), Deer Tick (performing Paul Simon), Fleet Foxes, Blind Pilot, The Decemberists, The Long Winters, Nirvana (live, in honor of his death, 15 yrs ago), Brown Bird, and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy.

Congrats are in order to Providence's The Low Anthem

Little Rhody's own The Low Anthem announced today that they have been signed to Nonesuch Records. How cool is that. Now, seeing them perform at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel on April 24th will taste even sweeter.

Tickets are still available, for 12 bucks. Elvis Perkins in Dearland, and Deer Tick (BOTH of whom are current blog favorites- check the last.fm page) are also on the bill. (Click HERE for tickets to the event)

from their web site
Today is a great day for The Low Anthem! We have signed a wonderful and fair record deal with the world's best record label. Nonesuch Records will be supporting our national rerelease of Oh My God, Charlie Darwin without asking us to change anything! The tentative rerelease date is June 9. Proper concert celebrations with all bells, whistles, whiskeys, etc. will be announced shortly on the website. Heartfelt thanks to all. Can't wait to see you!!

The Low Anthem

Poking around on youtube, I couldn't find any decent videos for the band, so I made a couple. Here's a video for the song 'Charlie Darwin'.

Audio/Stream: The Low Anthem - Charlie Darwin.mp3

Without knowing squat about the inner workings of the label and whatnot, Nonesuch seems, to me, to be the raddest major label in existence. They've been a favorite of mine since they signed Wilco in 2002, after the infamous fallout between the alt-country giants and their previous label Reprise.
